Today at HCS, we kicked off Spiritual Emphasis Week (SEW19). Our theme for the week is “Rising up to answer God’s challenges”. The first session is entitled “Rising Up in Worship”. Our morning session provided an opportunity for us to present Christ as the true Savior and how it is possible for us to spend so much “time” with Christ and still be completely blinded to the reality of who He is and what He has done.
During the small group time our Middle and High School students were challenged by discussing worship and focused on Psalm 95:1–9 and Hebrews 12:28. Psalm 95 had a lot to do with who God is and why and how we come before Him in worship. Here we can see that there is worship God accepts and worship God rejects. Hebrews pointed out that being in the presence of God should fill us with reverence and awe. Reverence is a great word here because it’s a returning of God to His rightful place, not just out of respect but with a healthy fear. David understood this when he is crying out for mercy (Psalm 51). Once we realize the rightful place of God and understand that respect and fear we can really stand in awe of the love that God truly has for us!
We closed out the day with a stop in Romans 12 and talked about how our lifestyle. It boils down to two questions for us:
1- Do you realize that your lifestyle is an act of worship?
2- Who finds your worship acceptable? Is it accepted by God or by the world (modern culture and the like)?
Here are some cool things you can talk to your students about:
• Can you define worship for me?
• What did you learn about why God is worthy of our worship?
• What does worship look like beyond just singing songs together as a church?
