Visual Arts

The Visual Art Department at Harmony Christian School is based on the understanding that God, the original creator, is a creative God who designed mankind to be imaginative and creative. He gave us the ability to produce artwork that is glorifying to Him. Students at Harmony are introduced to a variety of art materials and techniques. The early years are about joy and discovery as they learn about media, and the elements and principles of art. Art lessons also make connections to other subjects such as history and the Bible.

K3 and K4 have art once a week for 45 minutes.  K5-8th grade has two 45 minute classes a week.

Beginning in 9th grade, students may choose art as an elective. They may choose from Studio Art or Sculpting. These are two 45 minute sessions a week. The upper grades learn more advanced techniques and explore many different media.

The HCS Art department loves to show off our student’s artwork. The artwork is displayed throughout the whole school, often taking up as much space as the walls allow. The artwork is also displayed on the Slack app for parents, staff, and board members to enjoy.

At HCS it is our goal for students to enjoy art as they learn to develop their skills. All this is done for the Glory of God.

And I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the gifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you

Why do you like teaching?
"I enjoy sharing my knowledge and love of art with the students."

What led you to HCS?
"Actually, it was my son. As he was about to enter Valley Central Middle School, he felt overwhelmed with the 5 districts coming together and wanted to find a smaller school. One day, as we were riding by HCS, he asked me if we could go and look at it. I made an appointment and we took a tour. When we were finished and got outside, Bradley looked at me and said "That's the school for me". He started 6th grade at HCS. He's now in 10th."

What have been your roles at HCS over the years, including this year?
"When Bradley started HCS, I volunteered in the kitchen. After volunteering for a while, I found out they were looking for subs. I decided to apply. I enjoyed it very much and before long I was subbing almost every day. Now I am the Art teacher!"

What do you enjoy most about your time at HCS?
"HCS feels like family."

What are you looking forward to during this school year?
"I hope to inspire and encourage the students to explore art and discover hidden talents they may have."

What is your education background?
"I graduated from Valley Central High School and got my Associates degree in Business Management from OCCC."

Tell us some personal information you would like to share.
"I have been married to my husband Jim for 29 years. I have 3 children and I just became a grandma in August. We have 2 St. Bernards, 2 cats, and a bearded dragon named "Carlos". I've lived in Montgomery, NY my whole life. I enjoy all forms of arts and crafts (ex. painting, scrapbooking, cardmaking etc.).
Last summer I gave painting lessons to HCS kids (and some moms). I enjoy reading historical fiction, watching old movies, the Yankees, and collecting things with chickens and roosters."
